Day 1 – Owensboro, KY
Arrive today in Owensboro, KY, the birthplace of bluegrass music and Western Kentucky BBQ. Check into your hotel for a two-night stay. Dinner is on your own this evening. Most weeks from May through September bring free live music to downtown Owensboro on a variety of riverfront stages.
Day 2 – Bill Monroe Homeplace – Green River Distillery Co. Tour & Tasting – Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Live Bluegrass Performance – BBQ Dinner
Start the day in nearby Rosine, KY for a guided tour of the Bill Monroe Homeplace, where guided tours are often given by those who knew Bill or members of his family. Step back into music history at the beautifully restored boyhood home of Bill Monroe, the “Father of Bluegrass Music.” Imagine the musician’s life with his family high on wooded Jerusalem Ridge.
Returning to Owensboro, take a break for lunch on own downtown then enjoy a tour and tasting at the Green River Distillery Co. Visit this historical distillery and get a behind-the-scenes look into our traditional bourbon whiskey production. 28 acres of bourbon whiskey production, barrel storage, and history (did you know there has been a distillery here since 1885?). See it all, from grain unloading to barrel dumping, then taste a few of the products. This is a “behind the scenes” tour that will expose you to many different aspects of whiskey production! Following the tour, enjoy an included bourbon tasting.
The afternoon is spent at the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame. Located on the riverfront in downtown Owensboro, the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum is a state-of-the-art institution shining a light on the cultural music of Kentucky…Bluegrass. Come, immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of a music built on the foundations of gospel, jazz, and blues by the Father of Bluegrass Music, Bill Monroe. A Kentucky native he cultivated bluegrass music as a sound built on rhythm and harmonies.
The Hall of Fame tells the story of the greats who played the music including Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, The Stanley Brothers and more and continues the story to present day leaders in the genre. From Alison Krauss and Kentucky greats Ricky Skaggs and Sam Bush, to those who’ve taken bluegrass music to further heights, the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum is waiting for you and your visit includes a performance by a local Bluegrass artist.
Tonight, enjoy a Western Kentucky BBQ dinner. Just like Kansas, Texas or Memphis, Western Kentucky has its own unique style of barbecue. Centered around Owensboro – known around here as the “BBQ Capital of the World” – Western Kentucky ’cue famously features pit-cooked mutton, sliced paper-thin and topped with a variety of “dips.” And if you don’t yet have a taste for mutton, don’t worry: these BBQ joints also serve up pork, chicken and other slow-cooked classics. Day 3 – Depart for Home
After breakfast, depart for home or add another night and travel east to Bristol for the Cater Fold, or south to Nashville for the Grand Ole Opry. (B)
