Itinerary
Day 1 – Harpers Ferry – Rocky Gap Casino Resort
Arrive today in West Virginia for a tour of Harpers Ferry National Park. The history of Harpers Ferry has few parallels in the American Drama. It is more than one event, one date, or one individual. It is multi-layered – involving a diverse number of people and events that influenced the course of our nation’s history. Harpers Ferry witnessed the first successful application of interchangeable manufacture, the arrival of the first successful American railroad, John Brown’s attack on slavery, the largest surrender of Federal troops during the Civil War, and the education of former slaves in one of the earliest integrated schools in the United States . . . the setting is beautiful.
Following your tour you travel to Flintstone, MD for an overnight stay at the Rocky Gap Casino Resort. Nestled in the foothills of picturesque Rocky Gap State Park near Cumberland in the heart of Allegany County. This AAA 4-Diamond Award and TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence-winning resort, Rocky Gap offers a casino, hotel, conference center, Bonkerz Comedy Club, three restaurants and a deli, indoor and outdoor event spaces, the only Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course in Maryland, a spa, indoor pool, fitness center, pro shop, complimentary valet parking, individual parking, and several outdoor recreational activities. Enjoy free time at the resort to explore all the amenities it has to offer . . . and if you thought Harpers Ferry was beautiful wait until you see this mountain lake setting.
Day 2 – Western Maryland Railroad with Lunch – Depart for Home
After breakfast and a leisurely morning at the resort, depart for nearby Cumberland, MD. Arrive at the Cumberland Depot for a ride on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. Climb through the Allegheny Mountains up to 1410 feet in elevation from Cumberland, Maryland to Frostburg, Maryland. Along the way, you will find breathtaking views of Mountain Maryland. The train follows the Great Allegheny Passage as you go around iconic points of interest and through the famous brush tunnel. Lunch will be included today with your train ride.
On the layover in Frostburg, you can choose to disembark the train to explore the shops and restaurants on Frostburg’s Main Street (requires a 10-minute uphill walk from Depot). Frostburg features unique shops with talented artists and a winery that also serves local craft beers. Or you can also choose to stay downhill and explore the Frostburg Depot and the adjacent Carriage Museum.
After your return ride to Cumberland, depart for home. (B,L)
