Itinerary
Day 1 – Walnut Creek, OH – Whoopie Pie Demo
Arrive in Walnut Creek, OH and check into the NEW Wallhouse Hotel for a two night stay. Enjoy the modern décor and simply adorned rooms with most of the furnishings made from local Amish contractors. This evening meet your local guide and head to dinner at an Amish family home. After dinner you will make Whoopie pies with the family and take your treats home with you! You will also learn more about how the Amish ladies do their chores without electricity such as cooking for large groups, doing the wash and what the Amish children like to do since they don’t have computers or TV. Day 2 – Guided Touring – Light My Path – Millersburg Mansion – Pioneer Equipment – Wedding Feast Dinner
This morning following breakfast meet your Amish guide and begin your day. First stop will be at an old order Amish shop called Light My Path, owned by Mary Troyer. Mary will demonstrate how she makes her famous candles and then you will make your own “hand frosted muffin candle.” Then you will visit Troyer’s Homemade Candies to make and take your very own buckeye candies. While you are there be sure to sample some of Lydia’s most popular confections such as cashew crunch, caramel butter puffs, cream truffles, turtle bars and more!
Next you will visit the historic Millersburg Victorian mansion built around the turn of the 20th century and featured on HGTV’s Victorian America. Enjoy a tour of the mansion filled with history and possibly ghosts! The home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Following your tour you will have a light lunch net door at the Castle Club. The afternoon is filled with several unique Destinations…Pioneer Equipment – one of the few places in the world that makes Amish horse drawn farm machinery, Hershberger Baskets owned by Mattie Hershberger and Coblentz Collar Shop – an Amish leather business.
Finally this evening you will enjoy a “wedding feast” with an Amish family. The dining room is set up like an Amish wedding reception, pick three couples to sit at the head table. During the celebration you will learn more about the Amish customs and traditions. (B,D)
Day 3 – Hershberger Bakery – Homestead Furniture – Depart for Home
This mornings first stop is at Hershberger Bakery and Amish Farmers Market. The bakery features their famous fry pies, stuffed cookies, cream sticks, breads and more!! Take home some of the homemade jams, jellies, noodles and other treats. While you are there enjoy looking at Big Ben, the largest Belgian draft horse in the US!! Then visit one of the areas local cheese factories. Sample over 50 different varieties of cheese and watch cheesemaking in progress through glass windows.
Stop in Mt. Hope and visit Homestead Furniture which features hand crafted Amish furniture. This isn’t your typical furniture store, the floors are filled with exquisitely designed hardwood and upholstered furniture, much of it built in their own factory or by other superb Ohio craftsmen.
